Checking an Ahistorical Craphound

The other night, when I forced myself to listen to the notorious pseudo-intellectual Keith Olbermann, I could not quite understand his insistence on making the inapt —and inept— comparison between the Democratic leadership and Neville Chamberlain. True, both are well-known for their ignorance of civilizational threats and for their proclivity to appeasing mass murderers, but that wouldn’t really have been what Olbermann was insinuating —so what was?

Oh. That George W. Bush is Adolf Hitler. Again:

We seem to be very near the bleak choice between war and shame, Winston Churchill wrote to Lord Moyne in the days after the British signed the Munich Accords with Germany in 1938.  “My feeling is that we shall choose shame and then have war thrown in a little later.”  That‘s what this is for the Democrats, isn‘t it, their Neville Chamberlain moment before the second world war[?]

All that is missing is the landing at the airport with the blinkered leader waving a piece of paper, which he naively thought would guarantee peace in our time, but which his opponent would ignore with deceit.  The Democrats have merely streamlined the process.  Their piece of paper already says Mr. Bush can ignore it with impunity.

Olbermann and his fellow travelers, like the mentally-ill Mother Sheehan (whom the anti-war Democrats cynically brandished in the faces of their righteous detractors like a gypsy mother does with a piece of cardboard), think they are being bold and principled by criticizing the majority party —but they still can’t bring themselves to acknowledge why such a criticism might be necessary for them.

The answer is to be found in Olbermann’s claim that the Democrats were swept into Congressional power again on a mandate to end our involvement in the War for Iraq. He claims a virtually unprecedented and unambiguous message from the People to their representatives: get us out of Iraq.

But this is false. The 2006 Congressional elections were a very mild rebuke to the doltish and incompetent Republican leadership and party, in general. The Democrats were the merest sort of beneficiaries to this withdrawal of support from the President’s party —by default alone. Don’t think for a moment that Middle America is in any way comfortable with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

If most Americans were as intent as the anti-war Democrats’ rhetoric is on pulling us out of Iraq, it would be the easiest thing in the world for the party leadership to pass bill after bill defunding our operations. There would be no risk to these craven liberal bastards because it would be as poll-driven as Bill Clinton in the back end of an El Camino.

But is that what’s happening? No. Because this Democratic leadership knows that there is a downside to sounding just like Osama bin Laden. They know that their names will forever be associated with defeatism and dhimmitude if they dare meddle with the successful prosecution of this war. They know that there are consequences to acting on the disgusting sort of anti-American rhetoric that lightweights like Keith Olbermann fling around. I don’t know how, but they somehow do.

So there’s your disconnect, you farcical regurgitation of Dave Garroway. You believe that Bushitler has bullied and threatened the Congress into walking back from the ledge of ending the War for Iraq. But how —and this is what you refuse to acknowledge— how can a man so unpopular and so wrong and so immoral shame or intimidate people whose supposed cause you champion against his? What happened to their mandate? Aren’t they manifestly the President’s betters? Why can’t they —why can’t you— turn Bushitler out? If you’re so right and Bushitler’s so wrong, what’s the hold-up?

Pelosi and Reid and the other useful idiots aren’t pulling their punches because of what a weak and unpopular President has to say about it —but because they know that their position on ending the war before it’s time to end the war will come to destroy them and their irresponsible joke of a party for a generation to come.

The fact that you will not acknowledge why the Democrats caved is proof enough that you have deluded yourself into thinking that your understanding of our purpose in Iraq even matters. It does not. Your party is not the party of treason and defeatism because George W. Bush says so, but because History will say so. Pelosi used you clowns to get her hands on the gavel. Now you know the limits of your power —and your so-called mandate.
