My maternal grandfather, Jacob Joseph Shapiro (1896-1977), was a young doughboy from Pittsburgh who went to France to fight in the Great War.
He arrived, he told us, on 11 November 1918 —Armistice Day.
Today, on Veteran’s Day, I thank him and all of America’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines for their great service and sacrifice.
