As Steve Soto at The Left Coaster points out, MSNBC’s David Shuster reported tonight that Valerie Plame was working on anti-proliferation issues dealing specifically with Iran at the time she was mentioned in Bob Novak’s column back in July 2003 —essentially confirming a Raw Story report from earlier this year.

According to current and former intelligence officials, Plame Wilson, who worked on the clandestine side of the CIA in the Directorate of Operations as a non-official cover (NOC) officer, was part of an operation tracking distribution and acquisition of weapons of mass destruction technology to and from Iran.
Speaking under strict confidentiality, intelligence officials revealed heretofore unreported elements of Plame’s work. Their accounts suggest that Plame’s outing was more serious than has previously been reported and carries grave implications for U.S. national security and its ability to monitor Iran’s burgeoning nuclear program.
In getting carried away with all these demonstrations of loyalty and patriotism, it’s easy to pass over the implications of this story for our friends on the pro-mullahcratic Left.
One, they are actually acknowledging that Iran is seeking nuclear arms. Oh, it sounds like an obvious point, but there’s no underestimating how many [patriotic Americans] are able to forget that Saddam, too, was once widely believed to possess weapons of mass destruction — possibly even nuclear.
Two, they are not necessarily denying the importance or legitimacy of our intelligence community’s interest in whether Iran gets nuclear weapons. This can only be seen as progress for that segment of our society sporting ostrich heads (as often inserted in the ground as in their own asses).
Three, they are in no way embarrassed by the fact that what they believe they know of Valerie Plame’s intelligence work was actually leaked to them by current and former intelligence officials. See, the whole cause for their celebration of the martyred Ms. Plame is that she was outed by the community that ostensibly was working hard to conceal her identity. But this community told lots of people besides just poor old Bob Novak about Plame’s day job. They told Nick Kristof and David Corn, too. Wilson and Plame told Corn themselves, for Christ’s sake!
How can we know which leaks we are supposed to be offended by anymore?
